My Looks kinkalow cat breed info
I am an eye-catching cat, to be sure.
From my Munchkin parent, I get my dwarf status and very short legs. This makes me one of the smallest cat breeds, weighing just around half as much as other breeds. Even well into adulthood, I can easily be mistaken as a kitten for my pint-sized physique.
My build is so small, in fact, that my tail is usually longer than my body!
Make no mistake, though – my short legs are not some handicap or the result of some crazy scientist experimenting with genetic engineering.
My legs are purrfectly healthy and the natural result of a spontaneous gene mutation that controls the production of cartilage, leading to shortened legs.
I am no less healthy than any longer-legged feline and ‘though short, my legs are more than powerful enough to propel me into a quick dash or up your lap whenever I wish.
As if my naturally short legs didn’t make me unique enough, I’ve inherited the lovely curled ears of the American Curl.
Which means unlike other felines whose ears droop in the front or sag on either side, mine have a unique backward curl to them that form a crescent shape.
My ears are actually so curly that they can sweep back a full 90 degrees!
Interestingly, my ears start out straight like most breeds and slowly begin to develop their characteristic curls about two to three weeks after I am born.
Oh, and I should mention that ‘though rare, a few of us might never develop fully curly ears. However, they still carry the genes that are responsible for this quirky trait and can pass them on to their offspring.
My Personality kinkalow cat personality
What I lack in size, I make up for in playfulness. While I’m not crazy active to the point of being exhausting – I do get bursts of activity during which time you’ll see me zipping in and around the home chasing anything that catches my attention or trying to engage my humans in a game or two.
That’s ’cause I am quite partial to games that I can play with my humans, like fetch and tag.
Of course, I also have a penchant for toys that allow me to jump and pounce like cat lasers and poles with feathers tied at the end, especially if I know you’re on the other end, playing with me the whole time.
But when I get my bursts of energy, it’s not just toys and games for me. I also really love…trampolines. Sure, it’s not the typical cat toy, but that bounce is just irresistible!
Besides having a playful nature, I am also a curious kitty. I love getting in on whatever is happening in and around my home and won’t think twice about following my guardians around to do just that.
Although I may flaunt peewee legs, scaling high spots is always on my list of favorite activities. It may take me a tad bit longer, but you can bet I will make it to the tops of coffee tables and study desks once I set my mind to it! Kitchen counters are also a favorite, since they let me climb and spy on what you’re whipping up.
When I’m not zipping about all over the place, I’ll be in the mood for a little affection and won’t shy away from being petted. I simply love getting belly rubs and caresses between the ears! I also tend to make silly faces while at it, which my humans always find really funny.
Just to give you an idea, my curly ears shoot straight up while I stick out my tongue as if I just swallowed a pill that I wasn’t supposed to.
Oh, but that’s not my only quirk. You’ll find when it’s time for me to go to bed that I tend to sleep on my back. It’s just better for my posture, you know?
My Ideal Human ideal home for kinkalow cat
I am a cat that can be easily reared by all fanciers. In fact, I am one of the best picks for newbies just learning the ropes of the fancy since I am neither demanding for attention nor need any special diet and grooming requirements.
I am also a great choice for parents with younger kids and older cat lovers looking for a laid-back companion feline.
My Roots kinkalow cat breed history
My breed began to take root in the mid-1990’s when a cat breeder from the United States by the name of Terri Harris deliberately paired two types of felines she loved, particularly a Munchkin cat and an American Curl, just to see what kind of kittens will be produced.
Much to her amazement, the kittens that resulted from the experimental breeding program she set up turned out the way she’d hoped them to be. Apart from inheriting the Munchkin’s shortened legs and longish physique, they also got the American Curl’s characteristic curled ears.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about what happened next in terms of breed development or if Terri Harris continued to refine the litters she produced in the months that followed. What I can tell you though is that we’ve been granted an Experimental Breed status by The International Cat Association (TICA) and are also recognized by The Dwarf Cat Association (TDCA).
How to Keep Me Healthy and Happy
Interestingly, I am considered as one of the healthiest felines in the world of cat fancy. I believe I inherited this attribute from the American Curl side of the family. Besides not being as vulnerable to kidney and heart issues compared to other cats, I am also not as prone to genetic defects.
However, I still need a meticulous brushing at least every week to keep my coat looking beautiful as well as regular visits to the vet, say twice every year, to make sure I stay fit as a fiddle.
Stuff I Love best cat toys
I’ve always been a fan of interactive toys that get me moving and allow me to show off my jumping and pouncing skills. My first choice, of course, is anything that you can play with me, like this Fish Feather Teaser. I love me some feathers.
But if you don’t have the time, go for something that allows me to jump and pounce – which despite my short legs, I love to do. At the top of my wishlist is the Fling-ama-String.
And of course, you musn’t forget my daily climbing needs. Please check out some trees and towers for me to clamber up, keeping in mind my short legs (stairs and ladders help) and make sure there’s a comfy platform at the top for me to rest and nap on. A cat’s gotta take it easy, ya know?
Things I’ve Never Told Anyone
- Munchkinlanes Kinkalow Louie is the name of one of the very first kittens that Terri Harris produced when she bred her American Curl to a Munchkin. It is also possibly the inspiration for the name of our breed.
